The planning of a highway bridge is quite an important procedure, because the bridge type is determined in the earlier stage before detailed designing. However, there is usually no theoretical method for selecting an appropriate bridge type; thus, this procedure relies heavily on the engineers’ subjective decision based on their expertise. Since each engineer may make a different decision, it is often ambiguous to others. This ambiguity may result in selecting an improper bridge type. In order to overcome this ambiguity, a computer software is developed. This software has a knowledge base that clearly represents each engineer’s expertise. Moreover, the fuzzy logic is adopted to the decision tree in order to integrate fuzzy sets that represent linguistic expressions. With these features, this computer software is capable of simulating planning process of highway bridge with distinct grounds.
