Trends in teaching math word problems: a review of the research literature

For many years, members from virtually every sector of our society have been calling for reforms in our nation's educational system in general, and in the area of mathematics in particular. This thesis reviews research literature related teaching how to solve math word problems and published between 1985 and 1995; it also includes background information regarding various aspects of difficulties in solving math word problems common to all students, including requisite skills in reading, cognitive processing, and metacognitive controls. It points out that the special needs some students have are in addition to, not in place of, the traditional challenges in learning to solve math word problems and suggests that the two greatest accommodations that benefit students who have special needs are more time for mental processing and positive encouragement to get the students to reread word problems and practice the instructed steps for solving them. With the rapid advances in technological progress and no national consensus for a definitive excellent curricula, educators will perpetually need to make revisions. This thesis makes a case for claiming that the crisis in education is not as terrible as some would make it sound and that with positive attitudes and cooperation at the societal level, much more can be added to the good qualities that already exist in our nation's schools.
