Microstructural characterization of the alpha / beta titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V

Standardized protocols for quantifying microstructures have been developed using stereology. The protocols utilize Adobe Photoshop® and Reindeer Graphics' Fovea Pro® to streamline the robust and potentially unbiased quantitative microstructure representation. The protocols were tried and tested on a/ß titanium alloy Ti-6A1-4V. Microstructural features of interest ranged in size scale from submicron to millimeter range and included: Widmanstatten a lath thickness, grain boundary a thickness, colony size factor, prior ß grain size factor, primary a grain size, and various volume fractions. Image processing routines were developed for the quantification of these microstructural features. Measurements were performed on 240 industry supplied samples. Advances in digital imaging capabilities for microscopy warrant the use of high resolution digital micrographs. Routines were also developed for thresholding the micrographs which greatly limits the user-biasing and permits automated and semi-¬automated image processing and microstructure quantification. This research outlines the work involved in generating quantitative microstructure information including microscopy work and focusing on image processing and microstructure quantification.
