Abstract
Bioluminescent Imaging (BLI) is an increasingly popular, non-invasive imaging modality in small animal brain tumor research. This popularity can be attributed to its low resource, high throughput imaging and its ability to detect tumor development in earlier stages than magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, while it does appear that BLI photon flux signals correlate with MRI derived tumor volumes, pathological events seem to cause attenuations of BLI signal. In this study, three glioblastoma tumors models were investigated using BLI, MRI and diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) in an effort to investigate the relationship between these three common imaging methods. The results from this study do demonstrate that for each tumor model there is indeed a correlation between BLI and MRI however each of these tumor models display unique growth rates, patterns and deviations which we hypothesize may be the result of unique anatomical and pathological conditions. In an effort to provide supplemental, non-invasive explanations for these pathologies, DWI was performed and while inconclusive, additional research is suggested to fully assess its potential utility for monitoring disease progression and treatment outcomes. Finally, expanding on methodologies introduced by other researchers, a multiple-modality imaging strategy is proposed with the intent to maximize each technologies strengths in characterizing and classifying brain tumor cell lines.
