Investigation of fracture and springback in hot and cold forming

It is important to analyze manufacturing processes before running try-outs and eventually production to determine if the process delivers a product that meets design requirements. This analysis of manufacturing processes throws up a number of challenges, predicting fracture and springback of metals being two of the most challenging ones. This study aims to analyze prediction of fracture in hot forging (A type of hot forming) operations and prediction of springback in bending (A type of cold forming) operations. The thesis is divided into two major parts: prediction of fracture and prediction of springback. In the fracture study, various fracture criteria are studied. Validation studies are run to compare our simulations with experimental data available through literature. After the validation study, a real-time fracture case in hot forging is analyzed. In the springback study, various factors that affect prediction of springback in bending operations are studied. Validation studies are run to compare our simulations with experimental data available through literature. Three point bending experiments are conducted and material properties are determined using tensile tests and load-unload tests. The effect of incorporating variable Youngs’ modulus as a material parameter is analyzed.
