Using vibration characteristics to detect damage in a structure is a class of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) that is gaining popularity. The effect of cohesive zones at crack tips, and their hysteretic behavior under cyclic loading, on the vibration response of cracked structures is an important research problem in NDE. The present work attempts to establish a methodology to obtain non-linear load-displacement curves at the crack plane of a damaged structure using a hysteretic cohesive zone model. The methodology is outlined by considering an edge-cracked, quasi-brittle Euler-Bernoulli beam under cyclic loading. The cohesive zone traction-displacement laws used are a bilinear softening law for loading, an irreversible linear unloading law towards zero traction-displacement state, and a hysteretic exponential reloading law back up to the bilinear law envelope. The beam is analyzed using a direct boundary element formulation and a cyclic triangular load profile. The load-displacement curves obtained here can be used as direct inputs in vibration analysis problems as boundary conditions.
