Abstract Details

2003, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, EDU Teaching and Learning.
In this teacher-researcher study I wanted to find out the following: How are the choices that children make during their free- choice play influenced by my use of drama with children in teaching an integrated curriculum unit of study? As a teacher-researcher this study took place in the natural setting of my classroom. As I engaged my students in a multitude of improvisational drama activities during a unit of study on frogs, I observed, took notes, wrote in my journal, tallied frequency of free-choice drama activities, transcribed audio tapes recorded while children engaged in imaginative play, and reflected. I gathered data to analyze. I analyzed the data and looked for patterns as I reread my journal and the other notes I had collected. I counted frequency of free-choice drama activities and compared them to data collected prior to the study. I studied the work the children created throughout my investigation. I spoke with some of my students and their parents about play. I reflected upon my data and came up with results and conclusions. Improvisational dramatic activities presented to a group within the context of a unit of study influenced children's free-choice times. The improvisational drama activities influenced the children's free-choice time in a variety of ways. Central was the use of props that had acquired meaning during whole group activities. First, students used props that had previously acquired shared meaning to mediate their social and independent imaginative play. Second, children were more enthusiastic about writing in general; specifically writing in character enhanced the quality of their work. Last, the amount of imaginative play the children were engaged in during their free-choice times increased.
