In the mix: teacher-research into instructional support in multimodal classrooms

Abstract Details

There has been a growing national conversation about the role of multi-modality in secondary English education, but little research has been done to find out what students learn when they engage in multi-modal projects nor what teachers need to do to teach students to make effective multi-modal compositions. This research looks at my own practice as I taught 8th graders to compose video projects around the theme of community. While an essential question behind this research was to investigate what students learn, another was to investigate what teacher practices helped students learn. This study took place during the three-week unit. During the study I collected data in the form of student work (videos, drawings and writing) as well as audio and video recordings of classroom lessons and student-teacher conferences. My graduate advisor also conducted interviews with three case-study students; these were documented with an audio recorder. I analyzed the data using a combination of activity theory as described by Gordon Wells and an analysis of multi-modal classrooms by James Kist. Using these categories I examined my own teaching to make conclusions about how facets of my instruction supported students in their compositions as well as their understanding of the theme of community. I conclude that while there is evidence that my instruction helped students’ understanding of community deepen, there is much more I could have done to support students in their multi-modal composing process. I see the need for further development of multi-modal composing pedagogy so teachers can find ways to directly teach the skills necessary for multimodal composing.
