Abstract
This study examined the relation between students’ beliefs about the value and cost of higher education and their engagement in academic, co-curricular, and non-academic activities. A sample of 176 current graduate and undergraduate students completed a survey, indicating their perceptions of the intrinsic value, utility value, personal cost, and opportunity cost of engaging in higher education. In addition, students reported the average amount of time they spent each week on activities such as attending class, studying and completing homework, participating in campus organizations, working for pay, and completing household and childcare responsibilities. Results from descriptive analysis indicate that students spend much of their time engaged in academic work, although a significant proportion of students spent over fifteen hours working for pay. Overall, students report high intrinsic and utility value for college, although many also perceive higher education as requiring high personal cost. Results of ordinal regression analyses indicate that higher intrinsic value for college was related to higher likelihood of spending more time studying and completing household and childcare responsibilities, while higher utility value was related to higher likelihood of spending more time participating in campus organizations and less time working for pay.
