Assessing the Social Impacts of a Sustainable Technology: The Biogas Program in Rural China

Wei, Xiaoping

Abstract Details

2007, Master of Science, Ohio State University, Rural Sociology.
Today, more than ever, there is an urgent need for strategies to solve the global energy shortage. Among different kinds of alternative energy, biogas has been given special attention. Since the last century, there has been a longstanding interest in examining it. However, most studies were produced using perspectives from the engineering or economic discipline. Little attention has been placed from a sociological perspective, particularly in China. This thesis examines characteristics of adopters and explores impacts of biogas technology that is considered as an environmental innovation sharing characteristics with commercial ones. The findings indicate that age, education, income, and farm size are positively related to adoption, of which income has significant effects on adoption behavior. The findings also indicate that adoption has positively effects on household financial situation (savings on cooking time, electricity, and firewood), the gender division of labor (cooking, firewood collection, and fertilizing), and the community environment (the improvement of general cleanliness of community and increase in plant population).
