The Development and Application of Multivariate Analyses for Guiding Clinical Interventions and Mapping Representations of Human Memory

Abstract Details

2015, Doctor of Philosophy, Ohio State University, Neuroscience Graduate Studies Program.
In this work I will be describing research I have done across many areas of neuroscience on the application of multivariate techniques to neural analyses. The first chapter is a case study of the type of clinical problem where multivariate neural analysis could be used to improve treatments. Specifically, we used a personalized target for neuromodulation to treat depression in an individual who had sustained a traumatic brain injury. Next I present the application of state of the art multivariate neural analysis to determine how humans represent the space and time of their memories for real life events. This work provided the first evidence that the human hippocampus represents the space and time for real life memories. Lastly, I demonstrate a novel technique for multivariate analysis of larger neural datasets that combines the features selection characteristics of singular value decomposition with the modeling flexibility and power of mixed effect models to produce a technique that is more powerful than the best approaches currently in use.
