Affective Intervention: Beyond Campus Rape Prevention

Dean, Mary MacRorie

Abstract Details

2015, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies.
In this moment of national media and federal attention toward campus policies and practices around rape and sexual assault, Affective Intervention examines campus rape prevention programs. The first section argues for a framework of gender socialization for understanding some ways "rape ideologies" are disseminated. I explore masculine socialization and present the theory of collective responsibility for rape, and the role of masculinity and socialization on campuses. The final section presents photographic and theatrical rape intervention projects. I bring in trauma theory and the role of empathetic or affective connections in helping individuals subvert collective ideologies. Finally, the paper presents a vision for colleges that demonstrate a dedication to ending rape on campus.
