The development and adoption of the Common Core State Standards and new teacher evaluation systems that emphasize the teaching of academics schools brings new rigor and higher expectations to the teaching of students with disabilities. However, the focus on grade-level standards leaves little time to teach self-determination skills. One possible solution is to teach academics and self-determination simultaneously. This study investigated the effects of the GO 4 IT…NOW! intervention on one middle school student with ADHD. Following instruction the student showed improvement in (a) paragraph writing skills and (b) the ability to articulate potential individualized education program (IEP) goals in writing. In addition, both general education teachers and the participant found the intervention useful for improving paragraph-writing skills.
