Altered States

McGeehan, Shane

Abstract Details

2015, Master of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, Art.
Within an altered state our minds deviate from regular waking consciousness, allowing us to perceive our surroundings in an entirely new way. I am interested in the aesthetic and transcendent qualities of this cognitive shift, but also the fact that it is inherently a personal experience, perceived only within our own minds. My work explores these surreal realms of perception through the use of experimental camera optics, lighting effects and digital manipulation. As my focus turned towards a powerful psychoactive compound known as dimethyltryptamine, I began the construction of Altered States, an experiential installation about psychedelia and personal experience. This piece is designed to offer two very different viewing conditions, and between the two the concept of an altered state is echoed: exterior or interior, public or private, standing or prone, commodity or experience, standard lighting or flashing effects, static image or moving image, and so on.
