Recent climate reports have projected significant change for precipitation characteristics over next five decades. The rainfall events in eastern Corn Belt are becoming less frequent, higher in intensity and longer for dry period (i.e. interstorm). Considering the agriculture practice in Ohio is rain-fed, which is more drought-prone, to investigate the responses of crops under the projected precipitation is of great regional interest. Two corn cultivars, which are drought-tolerant (P0210YXR) and drought-susceptible (P0448YXR), were used in this study. Watering regimes are based on 62-year precipitation record in Columbus, OH. Three of the regimes with different precipitation seasonality, which are high accumulation early, consistent, and low precipitation early was applied. The mean interstorm length of these three regimes is 2.5 days (62.7 hours). The other three regimes extended the mean interstorm to 3.5 days (94.7 hours). Total accumulations for these six treatments are equal. In conclusion, the drought-tolerant cultivar employed conservative water use strategy and had lower shoot extension, biomass accumulation, and less water uptake than drought-susceptible cultivar. Drought-tolerant cultivar also has lower phenotypic plasticity than drought susceptible cultivar in order to reduce the adaptive cost. Interactive effects of interstorm elongation and seasonality is also proved by leaf extension results.
