Henderson, Trevion S

Abstract Details

2016, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, Educational Studies.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of engineering students’ self-efficacy beliefs in four academic subject areas (ASAs) (mathematics, science, computer programming, and technical writing) in students’ academic and professional beliefs and intentions in engineering. 149 engineering students at The Ohio State University, representing various engineering disciplines were surveyed in order to measure their academic self-efficacy beliefs in the four ASAs and general engineering self-efficacy, as well as their academic and professional intention in engineering. Results indicate that there are statistically significant relationships between and among self-efficacy beliefs in the four ASAs and general engineering self-efficacy. Results also indicate that self-efficacy beliefs in mathematics, science, and computer programming are statistically significant predictors of general engineering self-efficacy. Furthermore, results indicate that demographic differences in self-efficacy beliefs in the four academic subject areas. Finally results indicate that there is a relationship between general engineering self-efficacy and students’ academic and professional intentions in engineering. Implications of this study for research, practice, and policy are discussed.
