Nanopatterning on metallic and ceramic systems via self-assembly and polymer system via replica molding

Abstract Details

2016, Master of Science, Ohio State University, Materials Science and Engineering.
Previous studies on rare earth oxide (REO)/yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) system have provided understanding on strain-induced self-assembly of nanoislands and nanobars. We utilize this understanding and further explore to extend this process to metallic systems (Copper and Nickel) and ceramic system (MgAl2O4). We have successfully demonstrated that with an appropriate heat treatment, nanopatterns will form on metallic substrate. Nanoislands can grow on Ni substrate when Cu powders are used. On the other hand, Kirkendall pores are formed when Ni powders are heated on Cu substrate. We further extend the self-assembly of nanoislands on Spinel-(001) substrate. By depositing hematite (Fe2O3) powder, islands appear in powders' vicinity after annealing. Similar results are obtained with Nickel Oxide (NiO)/Spinel-(001) system. Finally, we transfer the nanoisland and nanobar patterns to polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) via replica molding (REM). Transferred patterns show great fidelity. Especially for nanobars on YSZ-(110), the replica pattern on PDMS has the identical pattern on master mold on YSZ.
