Forgiveness: Do Grand Gestures Work? Forgiveness is necessary to maintain cooperation through turmoil in long-term relationships. We explore whether a Grand Gesture, a monetary transfer, can sustain repeat purchases when sellers cannot guarantee high quality goods and buyers do not know sellers' investment choices. Results show that a refund increases the probability of a future purchase by 20 percentage points. We hypothesized that this is due to behavioral signaling that sellers invested. However, results from a treatment in which buyers know sellers' investment shows that refunds still increase the purchase rate, because buyers blame sellers for low quality goods out of their control, and refunds alleviate this blame. Legislative Bargaining with Teams We study legislative bargaining with two person teams versus individuals. Teams come closer to the predictions of the stationary subgame perfect equilibrium, passing minimum winning coalitions (MWCs) more often and having significantly more proposer power. The increase in proposer power results from increased numbers of MWCs, along with increased proposer power within an MWC. We investigate the driving forces behind teams coming closer to the theoretical predictions. The results favor their greater insightfulness as opposed to being more aggressive or more selfish. Why Do Teams Outperform Individuals? Evidence for Two-way Communication Many papers show experimental evidence that teams make better self-interested choices than individuals. However, there are many differences between teams and individuals. We present evidence from a signalling game that allowing two-way, continuous communication between individuals increases the rate of strategic play by almost as much as teams, holding other aspects of teams constant.
