Abstract
Cvek (partial) pulpotomy is the recommended treatment in traumatic dental injuries with a crown fracture and pulp exposure. Removal of the superficial exposed pulp and restoration with a biocompatible impervious seal preserves the vitality of the remaining tissue. This investigation compares the outcome of Cvek pulpotomies performed on permanent incisors in the Dental Clinic (DC) and Emergency Department (ED) at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH). There are three components to this study: data recorded at the time of injury, a 9-question follow-up survey and a follow-up clinical exam. Cvek pulpotomy treatment is considered successful if there are no clinical symptoms, no radiographic pathology, continued development of an immature root, dentin bridge formation and a positive response to cold and EPT. 80 patients were included in the survey and 31 patients were included in the follow-up exam. Based on clinical and radiographic findings at the follow-up exam, overall success of Cvek pulpotomy treatment is NCH is 71%. Success is significantly higher when the treatment was performed in the DC (90%) versus in the ED (36%). Based on these results, Cvek treatment is no longer performed in the ED at NCH. A protocol is being developed to consistently record clinical characteristics for Cvek pulpotomy patients in the future.
