Abstract
My studio practice is rooted in the traditions of craft in glassmaking where inherent in the physical nature of glass blowing processes is a reliance on others to successfully create art. As a starting point for my research I challenged myself by posing the question: What is the simplest act that I, as a glass blower, can do in the hot shop to make a glass object? In response, I focused my glass making for the thesis work on a simple two thousand year old tradition of free blowing glass bubbles. In the hot shop I worked with a rotating team of graduate and undergraduate students to create an object-based platform comprised of many multiples of large-scale blown glass spheres, or orbs. From here, my graduate work expanded into new and unexpected directions that included experimental investigations light, video, sound, and human scale. These studio experiments supported a greater ongoing research that resulted in works of art bridging areas of study ranging from mixed media sculpture to video art, and site-specific installations to interdisciplinary collaboration in the form of dance and the performing arts on stage. The works of art I produced in graduate school explored the intrinsic qualities of glass and served as a foundation for my thesis. The goal of this research was to re-insert the static glass orbs with the energy generated by the relationship of bodies and movement inherent in their production. The purpose behind the works of art presented at the Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition was to create unexpected and surprising physical interactions with glass and the public, in an effort to reinterpret traditional cultural views on glass that ultimately challenged their understanding of the material.
