Abstract
Identification of problems with socioemotional functioning is an important task in early childhood, especially for young children with developmental delays (DD) who are at increased risk of problems (e.g. Carter, 2010; Baker, Blacher, Crnic, & Edelbrock, 2002). Although there are guidelines in place for screening of developmental delays and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), there are no guidelines in place for the screening of socioemotional problems (AAP, 2006; Johnson & Myers, 2007). One of the first steps towards establishing guidelines is to determine which measures should be recommended for screening. There are a variety of parent-report questionnaires that screen for problems with socioemotional functioning. Some of the most common socioemotional screening tools include, the Ages and Stages Questionnaires: Social-Emotional (ASQ:SE; Squires, Bricker, & Twombly, 2002), the Brief Infant-Toddler Social Emotional Assessment (BITSEA; Briggs-Gowan, Carter, Irwin, Wachtel, & Cicchetti, 2004), and the Child Behavior Checklist for ages 1.5 to 5 (CBCL/1.5-5; Achenbach & Rescorla, 2000). In order to determine which of these measures should be recommended, it is first worthwhile to know if these measures agree with each other. The present study sought to build upon past research by examining agreement between the ASQ:SE, BITSEA, and CBCL in a sample of children with DD. Participants were young children between the ages of 18-36 months (N=38), and their parents, enrolled in early intervention services in Ohio. Full abstract can be viewed within the document.
