Abstract
Two-stage ditches are an improvement on conventional ditch morphology to improve water quality. Currently, choosing candidates for two-stage ditch installation involves sending people out in the field to assess stream morphology and make cost estimates. Having a way to remotely acquire ditch data would make this process quicker and cheaper. This study compares field surveyed data of 40 cross-sections within the Blanchard Watershed in Ohio to remotely sensed data to assess the accuracy of LIDAR data in predicting ditch dimensions including top width, ditch depth, cross-sectional area, inset channel width, and inset channel area. Two-stage ditches were designed for each cross-section based on regional curves for inset channel dimensions and a bench width ratio of 3:1. The amount of earthwork required to install the two-stage ditch for each cross-section was calculated using both surveyed and LIDAR cross-sections. These earthwork values were compared to assess the ability of LIDAR to predict earthwork for two-stage ditch installation. Although LIDAR data was able to explain between 72% and 96% of the variation for ditch dimensions and earthwork, all LIDAR predictions were statistically different from the survey values either in paired t comparisons, regression analysis, or both. This suggests while LIDAR is not a replacement for field surveying.
