An Analysis of the Order of Limit-Related Topics as Presented in Six Elementary Calculus Textbooks

Abstract Details

2017, Master of Mathematical Sciences, Ohio State University, Mathematical Sciences.
We catalog and analyze all facts, definitions, and examples related to the limit concept presented in six elementary calculus textbooks. We found that the six calculus textbooks have eight items in common, and we construct a weighted digraph illustrating the common orders of pairs of items included in the six texts, if one exists. Five of the six textbooks have twelve items in common, and we construct a similar weighted digraph for these concepts. Finally, we discuss the pedagogical and cognitive appropriateness of several edges found in the weighted digraphs, suggest two resources that address the objections we raise, and suggest a method for constructing a cognitively-based order of limit-related topics.
