The Effects of a Developmental Intervention on the Kicking Skills of Young Children with Autism

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a developmentally aligned kicking instruction on kicking object control skills of young children with ASD. There were the total of five children with ASD. The study was conducted in a school located in a Midwestern state. With basis on multiple baseline design across participants, there were two phase including baseline (general kicking activity) and intervention (developmentally aligned kicking instruction). To measure student kicking performance, there were three dependent measures including (a) percentage of correct trials in critical elements (the primary dependent measure as daily basis) and (b) two outcome dependent measures (TGMD-2 kicking subtest and stage level of kicking developmental sequence). Both the inter-observer agreement and the fidelity checklist showed more than 90% agreement. The results showed that there was an immediate change once the intervention was introduced across all the study participants. Two outcome measures also showed the effects of the intervention in qualitatively. There was the effect on the critical elements of kicking for children with ASD, as a result of receiving developmentally aligned kicking instruction and that this effect was meaningful.
