Evaluation of the Ability for Children ages 5-11 Years Old to Brush Their Teeth Effectively

Purpose: To evaluate which motor and/or cognitive skills predict effective brushing in children ages 5-11 years old. Methods: Children between the ages of 5-11 years old who came to Nationwide Children’s Hospital for their recall dental appointment were randomly assigned to either the manual toothbrush group or the electric toothbrush group for a toothbrush study. A plaque index score was taken on the participants using the OHI-S index. The children then brushed their teeth prior to taking a second plaque index score and the two scores were compared. A survey was given to the parents asking about a variety of motor and cognitive skills of their child. Results: 120 children between the ages of 5 to 11 years old completed the study and were included in the data analysis. Statistical analyses were performed using SAS 9.4 (SAS Institute, Cary, NC), with two-sided p-values <0.05 considered statistically significant. Conclusions: Children who can wash dishes by hand or play a musical instrument at an advanced level are more likely to remove more plaque than children who cannot. Being able to write one’s address with zip code, having good handwriting, tying shoes, cutting meat and food into bite size pieces and cutting out complex shapes can all be part of determining readiness to brush. The longer children brush or the older they are, the lower their plaque scores.
