Abstract Details

2017, Doctor of Philosophy, Ohio State University, Spanish and Portuguese.
This dissertation explores the graphic humor published during the Spanish Civil War in the two most important and ideologically different magazines of this period: the National La Ametralladora and the Republican L'Esquella de la Torratxa. I analyze graphic humor as a communication tool considering its impact in political, social and psychological relations. I perform comparative and textual analysis in order to discern how it replicates, changes, or perpetuates the representation of values in Spain during this period of significant political, economical and cultural transformation that anticipates the era of the Franco dictatorship (1939-1975). I argue that in wartime the satiric press plays a fundamental role. In particular, there is a crucial nexus between humor and propaganda during a war. I demonstrate that during the Spanish Civil War humor becomes an instrument of propaganda systematically used with the aim of discrediting the enemy s ideological principles and eventually weakening the antagonist. I argue that during the Civil War, the satiric press becomes a strategic weapon used by two different, opposing parties, Republicans and Nationalist, in order to pursue a ruthless and effective propagandist campaign. By contextualizing the satiric press as part of war propaganda, I point out the relation between humor as a product of a particular historical moment, and humor as a universal aesthetic and literary resource. The satiric press is obviously the product of a historical contingency, but it is also an artistic and literary tool whose influence cannot be separated from its social and political framework. Therefore, I explore the way in which the satiric press is a result of important sociopolitical changes, while at the same time promoting original ideas in a very difficult moment of coexistence between opposing ideologies.
