Aubade from the Woman No Longer Asleep

Talbot, Allison Elizabeth

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Fine Arts, Ohio State University, English.
Aubade from the Woman No Longer Asleep investigates place, specifically rural Maine, as it intersects privilege, history, and the body. The manuscript builds careful turns of language to pursue historic and current communication gaps and mistranslations, employing both straightforward, declarative statements and slippery turns of language. A series of aubades serves as a thematic crux; “The Sunrise County” was originally inhabited by the Abenaki or People of the Dawn, but the aubades also represent a reclamation of narrative power, as the form’s traditional addressee becomes its speaker.
