Model-Based Suspension Optimization of the Ohio State EcoCAR 3 Vehicle

The EcoCAR 3 competition challenges 16 teams across North America to develop a performance hybrid vehicle based on a 2016 Camaro with the goal of improved fuel economy, reduced emissions, and performance car driving quality. To achieve these goals a plug-in hybrid vehicle was developed that met the emissions and fuel economy goals, but the ride quality was poor due to significant increase in curb mass with much of the added mass placed over the rear axle. Improving the suspension characteristics to manage the additional mass is critical to meeting the team goals within the EcoCAR 3 Competition. Accomplishing this task required developing an optimization tool to iterate a vehicle dynamics model created in CarSim through a series of different suspension components and settings. Five maneuvers were measured and fed into an objective function to determine the best scoring combination to determine which of these combinations provide the theoretical best vehicle performance. The objective function results were used to select the most promising combination of components to use on the EcoCAR 3 vehicle. This included modifying anti-roll bars, dampers, tires, and static suspension settings. An experimental testing methodology is presented to validate the simulation results.
