Trends in Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Salmonella Recovered from Cattle Diagnostic Samples in Ohio

Salmonella causes millions of illnesses and hundreds of human deaths in the United States annually as both a foodborne and zoonotic disease. Reduced susceptibility to critically important antimicrobials used for treatment can cause these illnesses to be life threatening. In addition, Salmonella is a concern in cattle production, and causes illness, death, and decreased productivity. Antimicrobial use in the treatment of Salmonella in cattle may be a contributor to the incidence of resistant Salmonella infections in humans. The objectives of this study were to evaluate trends in antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella recovered from diagnostic samples from clinically ill cattle submitted to the Ohio Department of Agriculture between 2006 and 2017. Chi-Square Tests and Fisher’s Exact Tests were performed to identify significant changes in proportions of non-susceptible isolates over time. The most common serovars recovered were Cerro (32.8%), Dublin (12.3%), Typhimurium (10.7%), and Newport (5.8%). Overall, susceptibility increased for ampicillin, ceftiofur, tetracycline, florfenicol, and neomycin and decreased for enrofloxacin. Cerro isolates had the highest susceptibility and Dublin isolates had the lowest. However, within-serovar changes were most frequently not statistically significant throughout the study period. In conclusion, antimicrobial susceptibility trends significantly changed for Salmonella isolates recovered from clinically ill cattle in Ohio within the last 10 years, and changes were primarily due to shifts in the population of serotypes, rather than within-serotype changes. Susceptibility patterns are constantly changing and it is important to understand in what manner to stay aligned with optimal antimicrobial stewardship for both human and animal medicine.
