Mathematics Teacher In-the-moment Noticing: How They Use Scaffolding Practices to Support Student Thinking

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, EDU Teaching and Learning.
This study aimed to understand a mathematics teacher in-the-moment noticing of classroom instances and student thinking through scaffolding practices. This would enrich understanding of instructional practices and utilization of the support to promote student mathematical thinking. Teacher in-the-moment noticing was conceptualized as a set of components of attending, interpreting, and responding (Jacobs et al., 2010) to classroom events, interactions, and student thinking. Data was collected through video recordings of a grade eight mathematics classroom. Identified classroom instances between the teacher and a group of four students were scrutinized by examining what and how the teacher attends, interprets, and responds as well as how such interactions are manifested through scaffolding practices. The analysis of data revealed that the teacher simultaneously attended, interpreted, and responded to student thinking through applying different scaffolding practices. The findings of this study provide cognizance of the relations between the uses of diverse scaffolding practices and student mathematical thinking as well as interpreting and responding as intertwined processes of teacher in-the-moment noticing.
