Motivating Oneself to be Physically Active Through Selective Use of Social Media Imagery

Wilson, Brianna Rose

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, Communication.
To examine how social media use shapes health intentions, predictions were derived from the Selective Exposure Self- and Affect-Management model and tested by observing participants’ (N = 210) choices of Instagram-like postings, which depicted same-sex individuals engaging in either physical or non-active leisure activities. Participants reported current and perceived normative habits regarding physical and non-active leisure activities prior to and after viewing postings. After viewing postings, participants indicated physical activity and non-active leisure intentions. Results provided mixed support for hypotheses, however, larger samples may further elucidate the relationships between current health habits, selective exposure, and health intentions.
