Purpose: To determine relative Shear Bond Strength (SBS) of self adhesive resin cements to enamel and dentin in dual cure and self cure modes compared to a total etch control group. Methods: 48 extracted human molars were ground to mid-coronal dentin (N=96) or superficial enamel (N=96) and finished to 320 grit disks. One hundred ninety two e.max press cylindrical rods were prepared (L=5mm, Dia = 2.5mm). 24 enamel samples and 24 dentin samples were divided into dual cured(n=12) and self-cured (n=12) groups. Each enamel and dentin surface were divided among 4 dual cured resin cements (RelyX Ultimate, RelyX Unicem, Speedcem and Panavia SA cement Plus) and cemented with e.max rods as per manufacturer’s recommendations. Each e.max rod was etched with 5% HF (20sec), rinsed, dried, silanated, coated with each cement and seated onto enamel or dentin as per manufacturer’s recommendation. 100g of force was applied to the tooth/e.max assembly for 8 minutes. RelyX Ultimate was used as the total etch control group. The control enamel & dentin surfaces were etched with 37% phosphoric acid and the recommended adhesive (Scotchbond Universal) applied according to manufacturer’s instructions. An 800mW LED light curing unit (3M ESPE Elipar) was used to polymerize all dual cure groups. No light was applied for the self-cure groups. All specimens were stored in 100% humidity at 37°C and tested at 24 hours after cementation. Additional testing with dual cure activator: 10 dentin surfaces were treated with 37% phosphoric acid and Scotchbond Universal adhesive was combined with Scotchbond dual cure activator and applied to the etched dentin surface and e.max rod was cemented to the treated dentin surface with RelyX Ultimate, allowed to self-cure and experiment protocol followed as for the previous specimens. All specimens were subjected to shear forces by a universal testing machine after 24hrs at a cross head speed of 1mm/min. Data were analyzed with Kruskal Wallis and Wilcoxon test to compare groups (¿=0.05). Results: Results showed SBS of RelyX Ultimate to be significantly greater than the 3 self-adhesive resin cements on both enamel and dentin in the dual cure mode as well as on enamel in the self-cure mode. However, Panavia SA and Speedcem were significantly greater than Rely X Ultimate in the self-cure mode on dentin. Dual cure activator improved the shear bond strength of RelyX Ultimate in the self-cure mode and no significant differences were found between the bond strengths of self-adhesive resin cements and RelyX Ultimate on dentin in the self-cure mode. Conclusions: For dentin, self-adhesive resin cements Panavia SA and Speedcem had better bond strength compared to RelyX Ultimate in the absence of light polymerization and therefore may be considered in cementing restorations such as zirconia and metal, where light transmission may be limited.
