Biological Water: A Brief Review of Hydration Dynamics using Complex Systems

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Science, Ohio State University, Chemistry.
The following chapters provide a short depiction of the long history of protein-water interactions studied by the research group of Dr. Dongping Zhong. Specifically, fluorescence upconversion is utilized to study this complex interaction, which is characteristic to the protein of study. A total of three systems will be discussed in brief, and then one primary system, ¿M7-Crystallin will be more deeply analyzed. First, the experimental methods will be discussed in order to familiarize the audience. Next, model systems will be discussed, defining some characteristics of the protein, and more importantly the biological function of interest. Lastly, the system discussed will be analyzed using data collected by the defined methods, illustrating the full process conducted for each protein. Analysis of these processes could provide solutions to the poorly understood biological world. Such issues as cataracts develop from a precipitation of proteins within the eye, a worldwide issue whose mechanism is truly not understood. This problem illustrates just one motivation behind the study of proteins being conducted within the Zhong group, and thus should indicate the interest behind the study.
