Kripalu Yoga for Women in Intensive Outpatient Treatment: A Feasibility Study

Abstract Details

2018, Doctor of Philosophy, Ohio State University, Kinesiology.
In drug and alcohol treatment, it is imperative to provide the client with coping tools to manage their stress and ability to self-regulate. Research shows that an alternative complementary therapy, yoga, has merit for enhancing clients’ ability to self-regulate. While research exists regarding the use of yoga as an adjunct treatment for substance use disorders, the literature has not yet produced robust findings nor consistent findings. Additionally, there are no studies that examine how exercise impacts motivation for treatment and self-regulation in this population. The purpose of this pilot study is to explore the feasibility of implementing Kripalu yoga as a complementary intervention in an IOP + housing drug and alcohol addiction treatment program for adult women. The participants were 10 adult females who had been enrolled in the program and receiving services for at least 4 weeks. They were a convenience sample from an in-tact group; the study followed the participants for a four-week period during which the participants completed four 60-minute Kripalu yoga classes per week. Of the 10 that completed the pre-survey, 9 completed the post-survey and 8 completed the two-week follow-up questions. Measures included the Treatment Motivation Questionnaire (TMQ), Self-Regulation Questionnaire (SRQ), Health-Related Quality of Life for Drug Abusers (HRQOLDA) survey, and a demographic survey. Results indicated that Kripalu yoga is a tolerable and acceptable intervention in the IOP + housing treatment setting. However, no significant differences were seen on the psychosocial variables of motivation, self-regulation, and QOL.
