The Experience of Underrepresented Minority Dental Hygiene Faculty

Among entry-level dental hygiene programs, the presence of underrepresented (URM) minority faculty has been a persistent shortcoming. A critical need exists to investigate the reasons for the lack of URM faculty. The purpose of this study was to assess the experiences of URM dental hygiene faculty workload distribution, experiences within one’s teaching environment, cultural climate and diversity awareness. Methods This study used a cross-sectional survey research design, utilizing a questionnaire with 47 questions. Results Regarding the distribution of teaching load, URM faculty spent more time on community service projects than non-URM faculty. Regarding the need for cultural competency training, non-URM faculty did not feel that cultural competency training was needed, while URM faculty felt that cultural competency training was needed. Non-URM dental hygiene faculty felt that diversity awareness training was emphasized within their division and cultural competency workshops took place within their division. URM faculty did not feel the need to minimize various characteristics of my racial/ ethnic culture to feel relatable to others in the work environment. Conclusion There is a need for more cultural competence and diversity awareness training. Furthermore, defining cultural competence for one’s department to ensure that a healthy cultural climate exists may improve faculty interactions and relationships.
