Abstract
Aluminosilicate nanotubes (AlSiNTs) are potential nanoporous materials which could be used as reverse osmosis (RO) membranes for water desalination. A previous study has demonstrated their potential as RO membranes, with the detailed understandings toward the effects of the length and radius of AlSiNTs on the desalination performance. To further improve the performance of AlSiNTs in desalination, thanks to the highly tunable nature of AlSiNTs, surface functionalization of AlSiNTs may play a critically important role. In this study, as a proof of concept, the inner surface of AlSiNTs functionalized by siloxane groups was investigated. By systematically exploring the arrangement and number of siloxane groups, we found that the water permeability and salt rejection of AlSiNTs can be improved. In generally, water permeability reduces with the increase in the number of siloxane groups. However, interestingly, salt rejection is not a linear function of the siloxane number. The method of pore size analysis as well as free energy profile confirmed that water permeability is closely relevant to size exclusion. As for salt rejection, it is discovered that siloxane groups could also lower the energy barrier of ions permeating the nanotube by solvating the ions. The outcomes of this study demonstrate that the surface functionalization of AlSiNTs can substantially influence their desalination performance, providing the possibility of the better design of AlSiNTs as RO membranes with improved performance.
