Maternal influenza vaccine uptake during pregnancy: who are we missing and why?

Abstract Details

2019, Master of Science, Ohio State University, Public Health.
Influenza vaccines are recommended for pregnant women, both for their health and that of the infant. With limited contemporary data on vaccine uptake for this population we set out to create a descriptive model using observations from the CDC’s Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System to help target which women are or are not getting vaccinated. Descriptive statistics were done to show distribution of vaccination among different demographic and socioeconomic factors. Logistic regression models were built to asses which factors are associated with vaccine uptake. We managed to build an explanatory model [AUC 0.76] for the flu vaccine, finding that healthcare worker recommendation of the vaccine was associated with greatest odds of vaccination [OR: 11.9 95 CI: 10.6-13.5]. Our findings suggest that further efforts should focus on health care providers and making sure they are knowledgeable and properly communicating to mothers the importance of vaccination.
