Supervising Toward Culturally Relevant Pedagogy: Challenges, Efforts, and Successful Practices Through Middle Childhood Preservice Teaching

Through the lens of a university supervisor, this year-long dissertation study follows humanizing and ethnographic research principles to investigate the conceptualizations, understandings, and experiences of six preservice teacher participants in their efforts to practice culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) during their field practicum. As the university supervisor and researcher, I aim to provide additional support for preservice teachers in their efforts to practice CRP throughout their field practicum and contribute to fulfilling a need for more field-based research with regard to teacher preparation through critical multicultural education. With examples of both the difficulties preservice teachers face in practicing CRP as well as how participants are able to navigate through or around them, this study offers teacher preparation programs insight and information that could improve efforts toward bridging theories from critical multicultural education coursework into field practicum and beyond.
