Recent Trends in Fertility: Ambiguity in Rise or Decline

Abstract Details

2019, Master of Arts, Ohio State University, Sociology.
This study examines the recent trends in fertility and development (HDI) for 58 developed countries. Using publicly available data from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Bank, the present study breaks down fertility by development levels to develop an empirical typology for the relationship between fertility and development. Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) and Model- based clustering methods are used to classify the 58 countries into four emergent clusters. The development characteristics and relationship between fertility and development are described for each cluster. Results from the study show that both declining and rising (u-shaped) fertility patterns exist in the developed countries studied. Another finding is that gender development, education and income are the components that impact fertility patterns the most.
