Comparison between Athletic Trainers and Physical Therapist’s Management of Acute Sports Injuries and Medical Conditions

Abstract Details

2019, Master of Science, Ohio State University, Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.
Study Design: Web-based questionnaire Objective: Assess the perceived preparedness and decision-making skills related to acute injury and medical condition management between physical therapists (PT) and athletic trainers (AT). Background: Despite the number of injuries experienced in secondary school sports, the athlete’s coach may be the person responsible for providing immediate medical care during a team’s practice or competition due to some schools lack of sports medicine coverage. While ATs are usually seen as profession responsible for event coverage, PTs education and background may prepare them for event coverage responsibilities. Methods: Participants completed a questionnaire via Qualtrics. The study utilized a modified Likert-Scale where participants identified their perceived comfort multiple injuries and medical conditions. Participants responded to multiple case scenarios and were asked to determine what they believe to be an appropriate course of action for various medical situations. Results: ATs perceived themselves to be more prepared than PTs in every category (p <.05). Greater than 75% of PTs responded either “appropriately” or “overly cautious” to 10 case scenarios as opposed to 11 by ATs. A higher percentage of PT certified specialists stated that they felt “prepared” for 14 of the 16 injuries/conditions compared to entry-level PT’s. Conclusion: ATs perceived themselves to be better prepared to handle the acute injuries and medical conditions but only outperformed the physical therapists in select case scenarios. PTs with ABPTS certification perceived themselves to be more prepared than their entry-level colleagues.
