A literature review and meta-analysis of mindfulness in schools

The topic of mindfulness has experienced a recent buzz in school psychology literature – typically as an intervention practice with the aim of improving students’ academic and/or behavioral concerns. Mindfulness literature was explored through citation analysis platforms with the intention of identifying influential articles pointing to its origin: one of the practices of the Noble Eightfold Path according to Buddhist literature. Thereafter, mindfulness was adopted/adapted into the fields of psychiatry and psychology. Being a relatively new intervention practice, mindfulness was examined via systematic literature review with a quantitative (i.e. data-based decision making) lens to gather trend data. This screening process provided a broad scope of the literature and allowed for narrowing the focus to conduct a meta-analysis on mindfulness studies based on teacher-reported behavioral outcome measures. This study found an overall small to medium effect size; however, results should be interpreted with some caution largely due to the limitation of available studies, diversity of student/school samples, and breadth of mindfulness intervention programs and outcome measures used.
