Analysis of SIS Patch Model and Development of a Modified SEIR Patch Model Applied to the Current Opiate Crisis

Abstract Details

2020, Master of Mathematical Sciences, Ohio State University, Mathematics.
The contact and recovery rates of infection in a previous SIS patch model were altered in order to study how the basic reproduction rate, R0, depends upon dI, the movement rate of the infected population. When contact and recovery rates are independent of dI, previous work showed that R0 is a monotone decreasing function of dI. In the first part of this thesis it will be shown that if these rates depend on dI, the dependence of R0 on dI is generally not monotone, which seems to be more realistic from the biological point of view. In the second part of this thesis, a SEIR patch model applied to the opiate crisis in the United States is introduced. The opiate crisis continues to grow despite many efforts for preventative and recovery measures, listing rural living as a high risk factor. By studying the basic reproduction number of this SEIR model, ideal allocation of both recovery and preventative policies is calculated and the effect of population movement between patches, differentiated by city or rural, is studied to show how this affects their distribution. Continued efforts are needed to make the model more accurate, however this paper provides a possible solution to higher risk rural populations in crisis.
