Perceptions of Racism in Educational Settings: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Inter-Racial Stories

As Critical Race Theorists argue, in the new era of white supremacy, the dominant belief of the white society is that racism is a thing of the past. Such belief has had two major consequences. First, only old forms of racism are being recognized and second, instances of racism are viewed as singular incidents of prejudice instead of representations of larger systems of oppression and discrimination. The present dissertation is an attempt to investigate how such consequences show themselves in racially significant inter-racial interactions between white teachers and Black students in educational settings. By adopting Critical Race Theory as the theoretical framework and Critical Discourse Analysis as the analytical one, the study examines narratives of two Black students and two white teachers about an inter-racial interaction that each of them remember from the past. By foregrounding the voices of Black students, the study’s goal is to figure out the extent to which these students’ accounts offer a systemic perspective of inter-racial situations, and how their accounts are different from those of the white teachers. The study discusses the elements of the conceptualizations offered by the Black students and the white teachers, and points out some implications for white teachers.
