Socioeconomic Dimensions of Urban Greenspace Access and Usage Patterns

Abstract Details

2020, Master of Science, Ohio State University, Environment and Natural Resources.
Urban parks and green spaces provide benefits to communities that include health benefits, reducing urban heat island effects, and decreasing socioeconomic barriers. However, research suggests that there may be differences in urban green space access and usage by different communities. Understanding usage patterns of neighborhood parks by residents from different backgrounds could help improve park usage and access for all socioeconomic groups. Little research has been done on socioeconomic dimensions of access and use of urban green space in Columbus, OH. This study surveyed urban park and green space usage patterns by Columbus residents to identify perceived barriers and constraints to effective use. Results from this study will be useful in understanding how greenspaces are accessed and utilized to help in developing new inclusive initiates and policies in making urban greenspaces more inviting and equitable to all residents and communities.
