Abstract
Video serves as an educational delivery method with great potential to better engage many people in our fast-paced, digital world. Little research has been conducted to describe the efficacy of research videos in Extension education. This study aims to better understand the extent to which research videos: 1) stimulate the viewer to engage in learning, 2) increase awareness of opportunities to partner with Extension in collaborative research, and 3) cultivate relationships among people. Focus Group Interviews gathered perceptions from 14 individuals with pre-existing relationships with OSU Extension. Participants indicated they have viewed farm and agricultural related videos that help address a problem or opportunity to improve operations and that they find videos are more engaging than written materials. They watch these videos because they are from a trusted unbiased source. Participants also indicated they are more likely to commit to more in-depth engagement when they feel a personal connection to the content or to the educators in the videos. Almost three quarters of participants indicated they were interested or extremely interested in partnering with OSU Extension. Participants also indicated that a basic understanding of Extension is not widely known by the general public. More than 85% of study participants were between 27-62 years of age. All study participants indicated they regularly carry their mobile device and nearly six in ten participants view videos at least once per day.
