More Electric Aircraft (MEA) requires power densities, reliability, and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) mitigation techniques beyond what are currently available in aerospace. MEA is an intermediate step toward Fully Electric Aircraft, which expands the capabilities to electric propulsion, and requires even further improvements. To achieve the power density goals, electric machines and their drives are going to have to operate reliably beyond what is currently considered their maximum power. After the “nominal” levels of power are achieved, the behavior of electric machines becomes a bit less predictable, with nonlinear effects such as saturation, dominating and traditional methods of analysis, modeling and control fail to produce useful results. With field wound synchronous machines, saturation can occur interdependently from two sources: field current and stator currents. Each of these sources adds a different collection of harmonics to the air gap fluxes. Both of these spectrums are considered and discussed in this work. By understanding the harmonic signatures, this research aims to produce a more accurate analytical modeling method for salient rotor, field- wound synchronous electric machines (commonly used in aerospace) under conditions with high saturation. This method is fast enough that it can be implemented in a closed loop controller on a modern control system processor.
