Abstract
In this thesis, the development of an optical fiber-based gamma thermometer (OFBGT), for the purpose of inferring the power distribution in university research reactors, is described. An OFBGT is a distributed gamma dose rate sensor that utilizes optical frequency domain reflectometry as the sensing technique. The OFBGT, described in this work, was designed with the use of Monte Carlo N-Particle code (MCNP) calculated energy deposition rates, an analytical thermal model, and numerical modeling with the ANSYS steady-state thermal modeling package. A total of four OFBGTs were constructed and calibrated. Two of the four OFBGTs have been tested in the Ohio State University Research Reactor (OSURR). In general, the OFBGT performed reasonably close to the predicted performance. A data analytic methodology has been developed to infer the reactor power distribution based on the response of the OFBGTs. The methodology has been proven to work in theoretical cases to infer perturbations in the power distribution. The effects of delayed-gamma ray precursor build-in and random experimental uncertainty have been investigated in the context of the methodology, and the associated errors and uncertainty in the inferred power distribution have been quantified for certain cases. The data analytic methodology has been ultimately used to infer the axial power distribution in the OSURR based on experimental data from an OFBGT in the Water Irradiation Facility.
