Abstract
Imagine you are a graduate student whose summer internship prospects seem dim in light of a raging global pandemic. To your shock and bafflement, you receive an email from an engineer at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) about an opportunity to design a public-facing narrative Virtual Reality (VR) experience. From there, you spend the better part of a year designing and guiding the production of an intern-led VR flight simulation. To drum up continued support for the endeavor, you and your team storify your ideas in all internal materials and presentations. This storification captures the attention of leadership personal, who agree to allocate further resources for the project. To be clear, that graduate student was me, and the public-facing narrative VR flight simulation I designed was Greater Heights, a project currently in development at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center. After observing the enthusiastic response, word of mouth attention, and increased funding the project received from NASA leadership personnel, I posit that design storytelling was the emergent framework that provided this traction. Using qualitative research practices, I evaluate Greater Heights as a case study for design storytelling at an engineering-driven organization.
