Taking Measure of the Menagerie: Observational Constraints on Supernovae and Their Progenitors

Supernovae, the explosive deaths of certain classes of stars, are among the most broadly significant phenomena in astrophysics, contributing to our understanding of an enormous range of topics including the origin of chemical elements as well as the basic composition and ultimate fate of the Universe writ large. Despite this, many open questions remain concerning both the detailed physics that underlies the explosions themselves and the stellar systems that can give rise to them. In this dissertation I present a series of four observational studies that help to answer some of these questions, using statistical samples to constrain the origins of thermonuclear supernovae and probe the progenitor distribution of core-collapse supernovae, and performing in-depth case study analyses to better understand the unusual events ASASSN-14ms and ASASSN-18tb. I utilize a variety of data sources, but this work relies most heavily on images obtained by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and on spectra obtained by the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) and the South African Large Telescope (SALT).
