Interventions of History, Gender, and Politics: Four Argentine Women’s Artistic (Re)Visions Through Communication

Abstract Details

2023, Doctor of Philosophy, Ohio State University, History of Art.
This dissertation analyzes and explores political works by three Argentine women producing conceptual works since the 1960s -- Margarita Paksa, Marta Minujín, and Liliana Porter. I also study how their works connect to the works of a younger Argentine conceptualist, Amalia Pica. Studies of twentieth-century political art in Argentina have often featured the work of men but neglected the contributions of women. I am interested in advancing the field by investigating the artistic methods of four Argentine avant-garde women artists who question the patriarchal history of dictatorships and repression. My research is situated within the growing scholarship about Latin American women in the arts by feminist scholars of Latin American art. I hope to extend the parameters of Argentine political art to include individual avant-garde women’s interventions challenging bourgeois art audiences to question the status quo. In this dissertation, I take a cue from Giunta and Fajardo-Hill, Mari-Carmen Ramirez, and Ana Longoni to produce new research into the avant-garde practices of Margarita Paksa, Marta Minujín, Liliana Porter, and Amalia Pica. My guiding arguments center on works that reconsider and reframe themes of history, gender, and politics through repurposing methods of communication. The three older artists in this study use communication systems against the grain to subvert the repressive measures installed by the various military governments. On the other hand, the younger Amalia Pica uses communication themes to analyze and intervene into one’s understanding of Argentine history and how it still affects people today. All four artists in this dissertation have chosen to live and work abroad at different points in their careers -- some leaving Argentina to escape the dangerous political climate while others leaving in search of artistic opportunities abroad. In each chapter, I investigate the ways in which these women’s artistic interventions help viewers reconsider and reframe established these themes through the trope of communication.
